Private Hire Insurance (Minicab)

Private hire vehicles are restricted to pre-booking only, they are not permitted to use the sign ‘Taxi’ on the top of their vehicle and they are not licensed to stop at the side of the road or in taxi ranks.

Public Hire Insurance (Hackney or Blackcab)

Public hire or hackney carriages are permitted and licensed to collect passengers at the side of the road and join taxi ranks. These are the vehicles that typically have the ‘Taxi’ light on top of the roof, like London black cabs.

Different taxi insurance policies offer different levels of cover for different types of work, and getting the right one is essential. It is no good simply buying cheap taxi insurance based on the price if it does not provide you with sufficient cover for your liabilities.
